Pastor’s Notes Romans 12:5

“So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.”

Romans 12:5

Romans 12:5

In Romans 12:1 Paul says we should present our bodies a living sacrifice, which is our reasonable service. The most obvious place for us to serve is in our local church. It is here we have opportunity not only to serve but to learn the things of God. The Church and the Family are the two great institutions that God ordained and established for our benefit. Just as our family has many members, so too does our church.
As Paul wrote to the church at Rome, he dealt with a problem similar to that found in the Corinthian church. In the interval from Calvary to the time of Paul’s writing, the Holy Spirit had conferred upon individuals in local churches various spiritual gifts to help the church. Apparently, as at Corinth, some had come to view such gifts in an improper way. They had become high-minded regarding their gift. Paul addressed them: “For I say, through the grace given unto me, to every man that is among you, not to think of himself more highly than he ought to think; but to think soberly, according as God hath dealt to every man the measure of faith.” The word translated as ‘soberly’ (sophroneo) in this context has the idea ‘to think modestly.’
God has given to us whatever gifts we may have, so there can be no place for pride. Paul uses the illustration that the church is comprised of numerous varying individuals even as our human body is comprised of various and differing parts. Each has a function; none is better than another, and each one is needed. “So we, being many, are one body in Christ, and every one members one of another.” (Rom 12:5). Just like our human family, the church is made up of individuals, each differing one from another, yet each important to the whole. Likewise, the church is comprised of individuals who have been given varying gifts by God, and whilst they may differ, none is better than another. Therefore, though responsibilities vary, there is no place for thinking oneself to be above others in the church. It is worth remembering God loves us all and Christ died for all.
